Class Structure

Our specially written curriculum and specialist teacher training ensures our students have a balanced, fun-filled lesson every week. Although the structure remains the same each week, each lesson is different and, with the different age groups offered, a child can join the Academy at five years of age and stay until they are 18 without ever repeating a lesson.

Age groups cover:

Lower Primary – 5 to 8 years

Upper Primary – 9 to 11 years

Youth Theatre – 12 years plus

Many countries around the world also now offer Kindy Drama – a pre-school programme for 3 and 4 year olds and, in some areas, adult classes are also available.

The Academy year is made up of three terms: Terms 1 and 2 concentrate on developmental drama with each primary class consisting of introductory activities, speech exercises, movement and a creative improvisation or Mime to Music. In Upper Primary we also introduce mini-scripts so older students become familiar with using text.

Whilst Youth Theatre follows a similar plan, activities in these classes are age appropriate and the challenges increase as the students become more independent.

Regardless of age, the main aim of our programme is to build confidence, self-esteem and skill in verbal communication. All this is achieved through the unique, diverse curriculum we teach each week.

Term 3 sees all students in the Academy working on a scripted piece of work which they present to parents and friends at the end of the Academic year. Although there are presentations for parents at the end of each term, this is a culmination which sees every child on stage and involved at all times.

Benefits of our Programme

The Helen O’Grady Children’s Drama Academy was formed in 1979 when Helen O’Grady, a trained drama teacher, recognised a need for young children to develop their confidence and self-esteem and to improve their verbal communication skills.

Now, many years later, when we all rely so much on technology and communicate mostly through messages, emails and social media, that need has never been greater.

Our fun-packed lessons, for all age groups, instil, firstly in children, the beauty of the spoken word. They enable young people to have something to say, the confidence to say it and the creativity to make it interesting.

Ongoing attendance in the programme develops individuals at their own rate, in so many ways and allows them to carry their new found skills seamlessly into ‘real life’. There is no doubt it is the confident, well-spoken and interesting candidate who will impress the panel/ the school board/ the interviewers/ the audience. These are skills which can be learnt and learnt while having fun and making new friends.

Helen O’Grady Drama Academy

Through the programme thousands and thousands of young people find their voice, generate self-belief, become generous participants in life and experience much fun and fulfilment along the way!

My daughter attends the Helen O' Grady Drama Academy in St. Helens. Since joining, her confidence has grown and she looks forward to her lesson each week. Her lovely teacher, Andrea, has nothing but praise for her and is leading her into becoming a talented drama student. I would highly recommend this class.

St. Helens

Luca had a wonderful time! He has always had an amazing imagination and it has always amazed me the lengths he goes too. I am so glad he enjoyed yesterday and as you can see from the picture he is ever so pleased with the badge. He really cannot wait to return next week. He is already thinking about costumes he has that he can wear! Thank you.

Thank you for being instrumental in improving Tamsyn's confidence and for the great opportunities she has had in the shows. She has REALLY enjoyed herself. She is looking forward to the opportunities Redland high will give her for drama and I know she will enjoy herself all the more because of the grounding you have given her.

My children attend the Helen O'Grady Drama Academy Derbyshire and I am overwhelmed by everything the academy has given my children; confidence, fun, memories, excitement and belief in themselves. Thank you so much!

Thank you Helen O'Grady: Our son has been going to the academy for a number of years and what a difference it has made to his speech and confidence. Our boy is 11 and has oral dyspraxia, which affects his ability to speak clearly and his short term memory. He loves his drama and is very outgoing. He wants to get involved in the drama lessons and annual plays that his primary school put on, but has been held back because of his dyspraxia and has never had a speaking part. Helen O'Grady has been awesome, the staff are so helpful and understanding of our son's difficulty and he has always had a proper speaking part, even during the early years. Thank you Helen O'Grady for helping our son thrive and grow into a confident young man.

In school assemblies and plays, my son, Stefan was usually relegated to the background. He was bright but lacked the confidence to speak up and be heard. Since being at the academy, Stefan has bloomed and consequently had major parts in each successive school assembly. Thank you so much for instilling in my son the confidence to let his voice be heard and his presence be felt. Such confidence will be invaluable as he grows up and will help to prepare him for every aspect of life.
